Advocacy...Learning to Speak Up! As Teacher Librarians, we are at a crucial point in our professional lives.  There are budget pressures; there are curricular pressures; and there are political pressures. We have to become better communicators, learn how to speak up for ourselves, and learn how to speak the language of those who have power.  In this workshop, you will learn how to create a clear and convincing statement about your vision for library work. You will learn how to speak to various stakeholders (newspaper, school board, political leaders) and you will be able to practice.

Michaela Miller is a National Board Certified Teacher (AYA/ELA) at River Ridge High School in Lacey, a National Board and Professional Certification facilitator and has spoken many times in front of the legislature, the newspaper, and her school board. She also works with the Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession (CSTP) to put on a 3 day advocacy workshop each summer.

The Search Process and Social Studies Classroom Based Assessments The Social Studies Classroom Based Assessments include common steps that match our research process. The 29 assessments cover all strands of history, geography, economics, and civics with processes included. The WLMA CBA Task Force will share the pathfinder template and pathfinders developed for civics and other popular CBA assessments. Elementary and secondary sessions will be presented. Be prepared to learn tools and strategies to help your students achieve success. Morning Session & Afternoon Session (one elementary and one secondary) WLMA CBA Task Force
Internet Privacy and Safety Issues at School This lively workshop will open your eyes about online issues--what K-12 librarians should know now about security and safety on the Internet.

Mangia! A Feast of New Young Adult Literature 2007

Come to the table and enjoy a feast of new books for teens and the readers who love them! Jerene and Angelina return to the WLMA Conference for their tenth year with this perennially popular program.

Divided thematically, this menu presents fiction and nonfiction for middle school, junior high, and high school readers-- including new fantasies, biographies, fun nonfiction, historical and realistic fiction books. Each participant will take away an annotated bibliography, an understanding of recent trends in publishing and plenty of great stories to share.

Jerene Battisti and Angelina Benedetti celebrate their tenth year speaking at the WLMA Conference. Their love of good books is only matched by their love of good food and good friends.
